Sheffield Forgemasters was one of just six major British steel companies to attend the first UK Steel Council meeting of the year, co-chaired by the new Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, joined by a strong ministerial team including Energy Minister, Ann-Marie Trevelyan and the Business Minister, Lord Grimstone.

As well as UK Steel companies, UK Steel - the sector’s trade association, trade unions and the Devolved Administrations were in attendance at the meeting, which forms a key part of the UK government’s regular and ongoing engagement with the steel industry.

David Bond, CEO, said: "It was pleasing to meet the new Business Secretary and to recognise how important the UK Steel sector is to Kwasi Kwarteng and his team, with this engagement taking place early in his tenure.

"It was a constructive meeting and we discussed the challenges of how the UK Steel Industry makes the transition towards a zero carbon future for the UK, in line with the Government’s net zero carbon agenda.

"Sheffield Forgemasters believes that UK Steel can emerge from this transition as a globally competitive leader in the green economy, with routes into Civil Nuclear, Hydrogen power and Offshore Wind Power initiatives offering great potential to develop those industries."

The Steel Council offers the forum for government, industry and trade unions to work in partnership on the shared objective of creating an achievable, long-term plan to support the UK steel sector.
