Open doors at Forgemasters

16 May 2014

Members of the public were given a rare glimpse behind the scenes at Sheffield Forgemasters.

And were able to see an impressive 10,000 tonne forging press in action.

Sheffield Forgemasters International (SFIL) held a special open day to allow guests to see what lies behind the gates of the Brightside Lane site.

Hundreds attended the day which allowed proud family members and friends, retired former workers and specially invited guests the chance to see what goes on at the 64 acre site.

Visitors were taken on a two and a half hour tour of the site and were able to look inside the different areas of production including the Forge, Foundry, Melt Shop, the quarter mile long South Machine Shop and the North Machine Shop.

Mark Tomlinson, group development director at Sheffield Forgemasters, said: “We started running the annual open day seven years ago and it is always extremely popular.

“We get so many requests from people wanting to look around the site and see what we do that we decided to hold a day-long event that offers people that chance.

“It’s also a really good opportunity for employee’s friends and families to understand more about what happens where their loved ones work."

Master Cutler, and SFIL chairman, Tony Pedder also showcased the site to more than 90 guests following the Cutler's Feast in Sheffield.
