09 December 2013

Sheffield Forgemasters' chief executive Graham Honeyman has become an honorary doctor of Business Administration at Teesside University.

Dr Honeyman joined 11 other outstanding figures including BBC TV business journalist Stephanie McGovern, senior vice president of Delta Air Lines, Graeme Burnett and Teesside-born actor and Strictly Come Dancing star Mark Benton at the ceremony.

North Allerton-born Dr Honeyman completed his PhD as a metallurgist, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, at Teesside University.

He was honoured for his work at Sheffield Forgemasters after heading a management buyout in 2005 and leading the company to great success in terms of both reputation and turnover.

Dr Honeyman said: “I am absolutely over the moon with the honour. It was a polytechnic when I was there and has now grown out of all recognition. It has gained a fantastic reputation. I am very proud to have received this accolade.

“As a company we’ve taken a lot of apprentices and graduates and our biggest ethos is to be true to yourself and always try and reach for the top. You can’t be ordinary, you have to be extraordinary.”

The accolade brings to close a successful year for Dr Honeyman who won the Leadership & Strategy award at The Manufacturer awards; Turnaround Entrepreneur award at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards; Chief Executive of the Year at the PWC Private Business Awards and International Person of the Year at the Insider Yorkshire International Trade Awards.
