SUFC award top box to SFIL

11 July 2013

The Blades have awarded Forgemasters the use of an executive box at Bramall Lane, to say thank you for raising thousands of pounds at a charity football tournament.

Forgemasters workers raised £6,000 by entering two teams into Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s Team of Steel Cup in May.

Twenty teams from the across the region took part in the fundraiser at The Lane for the Cancer Charity’s ‘Do Your Bit Campaign’, which is raising money to provide a new Cancer Research and Treatment Suite at Weston Park Hospital.

Legends from both Sheffield United FC and Sheffield Wednesday FC, including David Holdsworth, David Hirst, Lawrie Madden, John Pearson, Glynn Hodges and Bobby Davison, also took part.

Dave McCarthy, Sheffield United operations director said: “The event was a great success; the sun was shining and all the teams and legends competed with great spirit.

“United wanted to thank the team that raised the most money and so we have presented Sheffield Forgemasters with the use of an executive box for the first game of the season, as collectively they raised a huge amount.”

Overall the football tournament raised £25,000, which will be doubled to £50,000 by not-for-profit health insurance provider Westfield Health. Westfield’s Charitable Trust has pledged £350,000 to the campaign - its biggest ever single donation, kick-starting the campaign with £100,000 and then matching all Do Your Bit donations pound-for-pound, up to a further £250,000.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity needs to raise £1.5million in total this year in order to fund a wide range of projects that support pioneering cancer research and help to improve the treatments and care for people living with cancer.
