International trade awards for Forgemasters
09 May 2013
Sheffield Forgemasters took two top honours at the 2013 Insider Yorkshire International Trade Awards.
Chief executive Professor Graham Honeyman won International Person of The Year while Forgemasters’ subsidiary Vulcan SFM picked up the Energy Industry Award at the event attended by more than 200 representatives of the region's top businesses at the Royal Armouries inn Leeds last night.
Judges agreed Professor Honeyman had steered the business to become one of the most recognised names and pioneering forces in global engineering, pushing the Sheffield and Yorkshire name across the globe.
Professor Honeyman said: “We have heard stories about China and Korea being massive producers, but you cannot beat being in Yorkshire and especially South Yorkshire where we are continuing to lead the way with technology, knowledge and expertise. This is where it is at.”
Forgemasters’ offshore technology and project management specialist Vulcan SFM was rewarded for its impressive growth, diversity of products and expansion into new global markets.
Judges were wowed by Vulcan’s rapid growth, strong percentage of international trade and success in markets such as Africa, Malaysia and Brazil.
Other Sheffield winners included Firth Rixson which took both the Large Manufacturer Award (turnover £25m plus) and the Grand Prix Award and Chesterfield Special Cylinders which won the SME Manufacturer Award (turnover under £25m).
Yorkshire Business Insider editor Richard Abbott praised every company that was nominated for an award.
He said: "Everyone here is a winner tonight because your business has achieved something incredibly impressive; something that takes determination and skill.
“You have looked beyond this country's borders, identified opportunities to distribute your product or service overseas and succeeded in selling it to new markets. That, in my book, is winning.”
