Blooming marvellous at Sheffield Forgemasters
23 September 2011
Sheffield Forgemasters took joint honours with a picturesque Harrogate tea rooms in the Yorkshire in Bloom 2011 awards.
Forgemasters and the famous Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate were awarded gold awards and joint category winners in the business premises category.
The company has planted more than 6,500 sq ft of native British trees, shrubs and plants along with more exotic varieties to brighten its 64 acre Brightside Lane site and encourage more wildlife to the area.
This is the second year running that the engineering giant has won the accolade.
Vicky Hinchcliffe, group environment director at SFIL, said: “We are absolutely delighted to win the award in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition. It is a true testament to the vision of everyone who has been involved.
“Forgemasters is a historic industrial company and there are many interesting spaces across the site. There has been a varied planting programme which also helps to screen some of the work plant.
“Since winning last year, we have continued to maintain and improve the wildlife areas. Staff on site take real ownership of the planted areas and it gives everyone here a sense of pride in the company.
“Following a joint project with the Environment Agency and the River Stewardship Company last year to remove shoal and large trees from the river to help prevent flooding, we have now replanted the river boarder with more suitable, low-lying vegetation which will better support biodiversity and wildlife.”
One of the centrepieces to Forgemasters horticultural efforts is a roundabout at Gate 2 on Brightside Lane, which has been planted to replicate the company’s distinctive logo.
Judges for the Yorkshire in Bloom competition said: “Forgemasters is something of a hidden treasure, it is well maintained and the planned out features of horticultural excellence which has to be seen to be believed and enjoyed.
“The entrance gates are a blaze of colour in the well planted and maintained seasonal flower boxes which gives a welcome to all.”
Forgemaster’s dedication to preserving green areas and encouraging biodiversity has also been recognised with a corporate membership certificate from Sheffield Wildlife Trust.
