Sheffield Forgemasters’ specialist offshore design and project management division, Vulcan SFM, has secured a £1.3m deal with a fast growing offshore engineering supplier.

Sheffield Forgemasters’ specialist offshore design and project management division, Vulcan SFM, has secured a £1.3m deal with a fast growing offshore engineering supplier.

The contract, which will see the company deliver six drill riser joints to Norwich-based Aquaterra Energy Ltd, is one of the first of its kind for Vulcan and forms part of the company’s ongoing strategy to increase supply of forged steel components to the offshore market.

The components, each measuring between 5.6m to 12.1m, will be used to transfer minerals from the seabed to the surface in oil fields across the North Sea, operating effectively in the world’s most difficult sub-sea environment.

Neil Sawyer, forgings sales manager, said: “Vulcan SFM is pleased to be supporting Aquaterra in the manufacture of these components which will see service in some of the world’s most extreme drilling conditions.

“Vulcan has the ability to conduct all of the manufacturing stages for these components on one site, including machining, cladding and pressure testing, which means that we can closely monitor manufacturing progress and achieve tight schedule requirements.

“The Aquaterra contract is a great and positive outcome from a large body of development work which Vulcan has been conducting into offshore forging materials over the past twelve months.”

In the last year, Forgemasters has invested significantly in increasing manufacturing capability for forged components, commissioning a new 4000T press and making improvements to heat treatment.

These improvements, combined with the creation of an integrated machine shop, long product boring capability and excellent technical expertise in high quality product and materials allows Vulcan SFM to capitalise on what is an exceptionally strong offshore market at present.

Neil said: “This order came about because we gave the customer high level technical support, based on over 30 years experience manufacturing riser joints.

“Vulcan SFM’s strength lies with the fact that we have a wealth of technical expertise and innovation. This allows us to create products which are high in quality yet can be delivered in shorter timescales than our competitors, therefore ensuring we stand out in what is an incredibly competitive market.”

The global offshore oil and gas industry is thriving at the moment, due to a strong crude oil price which provides for investment in field expansion and new field developments. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in Vulcan SFM’s orders, with contracts being secured in Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea.
