Forgemasters' non executive director picks up regional award

10 September 2010

Peter Birtles of Sheffield Forgemasters International Limited was named Yorkshire Non Executive Director of the Year at the Institute of Directors' annual regional awards.

Peter was among a selection of inspiring business leaders to pick up an accolade at the awards, now in their sixth year.

He was one of only four directors from South Yorkshire companies to make the shortlist of the 21 business leaders from across the region for the Yorkshire Director of the Year Awards.

As an non executive director Peter works closely with the SFIL board on a continued financial and educational reinvestment programme. This programme has majored on reinvesting all profits to update plant machinery, to invest in new technologies, with a strong emphasis on building up the company's unique skills base through a dedicated apprenticeship scheme and the drive to seek out and service niche markets.

Peter said: "Some non executive directors take a less active role in the management of a company but over the last five years since the MBO my role has been increasingly hands on. My relationship with the directors and chairman has been vital for this and to understand what the real state of the business is.

"Every day brings a different challenge at Sheffield Forgemasters and I feel privileged to have seen, and been part of the company which has grown and achieved fantastic results since the MBO."

John Thompson, regional director for the IoD in Yorkshire and the Humber, said: "This was a superb night that celebrated the outstanding achievements of some of Yorkshire's most dynamic business leaders.

"This year's entries were particularly strong and I want to acknowledge the success of the winners whose hard work and innovation achieves incredible results for their companies and contributes to the prosperity of this region."

Last year Forgemasters' chief executive Graham Honeyman picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award at the event. Graham is now shortlisted for the Global Director of the Year award at the IoD Director of the Year awards - UK Final 2010 - which determines who is the best of the best in British business. Winners will be announced in London in October.
