Forgemasters rolls out new deal with Russian giant

20 August 2010

Sheffield Forgemasters has retained its position as the world's largest supplier of steel rolls to Russia, with a contract worth more than £5m for work and back-up rolls with Russia's largest steel company, Severstal.

The deal, to provide 186 work rolls and 14 back up rolls, fulfils the majority of Severstal's roll requirements for the whole of 2011.

The rolls will be used in a wide strip cold rolling mill in Cherepovets, North West Russia, rolling steel sheets for domestic use in car manufacturing, cladding for buildings, food containers and white goods such as fridges and washing machines.

Ken Brooks, senior sales manager at Forgemasters, said: "We have been working closely with Severstal for more than ten years now and our relationship has always been a strong one.

"Russia has a huge domestic demand for steel and Forgemasters is a leading supplier of forged steel rolls necessary for the manufacture of steel sheets.

"This new contract is an exciting development in the continuation of our relationship with Severstal and helps secure our place as the country's leading steel roll provider"

The rolls, which vary in weight from 4.5 to 30 tonnes, will be shipped out to Russia throughout 2011.

Creating the rolls requires specialist skills at Forgemasters, with processes ranging from forging each ingot to heat treatment which takes the rolls from +940 degrees to -40 degrees and creates highly specific hardness properties.

They are machine finished to within 0.05 mm on computer controlled machine tools.

Vladimir Varzunov, manager of equipment purchasing at SeverStal, said: "Business relations between Severstal and Sheffield Forgemasters are very well established. Forgemasters supplies more steel rolls to us than any other roll maker, averaging 300 per year, and has been our supplier for eleven years, longer than any other company.

"The collaboration was a success from the outset. Sheffield Forgemasters was seeking new markets and for Severstal the trading requirements were for modern technologies and the highest quality of products.

"Its success as our key supplier is based on the quality of its products combined with a very reliable service and strong, honest relationships which have grown between staff at the two companies."

Russia has become a key new customer base for Forgemasters as the company increases its reach into new global markets such as South and Central America.
