Forgemasters is blossoming as it creates a floral wonderland
Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd (SFIL), is blossoming after turning swathes of its 64 acre site into a floral wonderland.
So far, the company has turned over nine separate plots totalling 1,700 sq metres and planted more than 4,000 plants to transform sections of the site and now looks set to tackle another great patch of land, taking the total of green space to 6,000 sq metres.
The company has now entered the business premises category of the Yorkshire in Bloom competition after Sheffield City Council officials commended the green efforts made by the management to revitalise sections of the plant with trees and flowers.
Dave Green, group environment director at SFIL, said: "This is an old industrial company and there are many interesting spaces across the site, which suit the planting programme and help to screen some of the plant.
"The difference that green spaces make to the immediate environment is fantastic. We have had a lot of support from Graham Honeyman, the chief executive here who first suggested the idea, but we have also been very lucky to have had input from Tinsley Tree Project, advisors for our planting programme.
"The workforce takes real ownership of the planted areas and it gives everyone here a sense of pride in the company. Entering into the Yorkshire in Bloom competition seemed like the most natural thing to do after all of our hard work."
Among the green areas, Dave and his team have also created a water feature including a pond stocked with fish, which have managed to breed during their time on site.
Officials from Yorkshire in Bloom will visit the Brightside lane site on July 17 and will judge the site on criteria including impact and overall presentation, standard of horticulture, special floral features, staff involvement, floral displays, permanent landscaping and environmental factors.
Yorkshire in Bloom is the voluntary regional organisation that administers the Britain in Bloom competition in North, South, East and West Yorkshire, North and North-East Lincolnshire.
