Top nomination for chief executive
16 April 2007
Sheffield Forgemasters' chief executive has been nominated for a prestigious entrepreneurial award.
Dr Honeyman has been nominated in the regional rounds of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award 2007 for his ingenuity and drive which has helped a reversal of fortunes for Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd (SFIL) - the world's largest independent forgemaster.
The nomination puts Dr Honeyman in contention for the northern category of the awards which will be decided in June and which could lead to national and then worldwide recognition in more than 40 countries over the following months.
The awards recognise entrepreneurial spirit and winners have to demonstrate innovation, strategic direction, leadership and building of teams, financial, performance, national or global impact and social responsibility.
Dr Honeyman, who has been awarded the Winston Churchill Medal in 1987 for the study of supercritical power stations and the Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal in recognition of an outstanding personal contribution to British Engineering in 1997, led the SFIL management buyout team in 2005, securing some 600 jobs and the company's future.
His subsequent involvement at the 200-year-old company has seen exports reach 80 per cent and paved the way for the creation of a specialist project management and design sub-company, Vulcan SFM, which is winning diverse contracts from nuclear agencies and the offshore industries.
