Families see the steel spectacle
16 October 2006
Sheffield Forgemasters opened its vast doors to allow 250 of its employees' family members and friends to see the largest engineering processes in the UK.
Forgemasters' staff showed their nearest and dearest the work they undertake at the engineering giant during the family open day - including the casting, forging and machining processes that give the company its international prominence.
Throughout the tour, invited guests were shown the entire range of processes at the company including the melt shop and the foundry.
On show in the forge was one of the world's largest forging presses with an operating pressure of 10,000 tons.
SFIL's David Fletcher said: "The day came about due to the immense pride that our staff have in the operation here. They wanted to show their family and friends where they work, the scale of the work that goes on here day in, day out."
