Sheffield Forgemasters' Research & Development (R&D) team invests a lot of time into the prediction and analysis phases of a component production.
Prediction and analysis software, tools and methods allow Sheffield Forgemasters to accurately predict the outcome of a steel casting or forging. This is vital in castings that involve over 600 tonnes of liquid metal for example.
The cost of failure in projects like this is extremley high, even just in terms of wasted material in the event of a component failing. Our teams will therefore invest hours and days into advanced simulation techniques to ensure components do not fail.
Trials are expensive and the physical size and weight of some components we create means that test pieces cannot be produced. We therefore need to manufacture components right first time.
This is achieved with several prediction and analysis tools from good old fashioned know how to the latest software and technology.
Computer modelling enables us to analyse and perfect virtual scenarios before implementing ‘right first time’ products and processes routed. This allows for reduced risk and cost while enhancing productivity.
Being able to predict the outcome of a project is critical to the precision of the finished component.
We use Finite Element Modelling (FEM) for forging, (DEFORM, Forge) and casting (Procast, Thercast, Magma), Structural Stress Analysis (Ansys) assists in the high level of accuracy required to produce such high quality products.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) (Ansys Fluent) in addition to liquid metal flow in steel making processes and castings can predict model fluid flow in heating or cooling processes. Prediction is crucial to optimise and improve property uniformity.
