Sheffield Forgemasters' Research & Development (R&D) team use sophisticated methods to develop new technologies and techniques for steel production.
Our research and development team are experts in developing new ways of solving complex engineering challenges. This allows us to produce some of the largest and most complex steel castings and forgings in the world.
We work closely with our customers to ensure that the end product is optimised. This can include developing bespoke steel grades to suit a particular applications or simply using our wide range of experience to suggest the grade most appropriate.
Using vast forging and casting experience, Sheffield Forgemasters is able to provide bespoke process development.
New processes can be simulated and refined in order to meet customer requirements. Both the manufacturing route and the final product design can be optimised.
This allows us to produce highly complex steel components that would otherwise fail in the manufacturing process.
Meeting required final properties are key and in some cases this is achieved simply through knowledge of correct steel grades.
We work with our customers to develop intricate designs to produce bespoke products tailored to their requirements.
We have continuously improved which has enabled us to advance the production of development forgings particularly those for AWE. Supporting this with developmental trials as part of our research large bids and programs for example Innovate UK/BEIS or a customer funded projects.
We use processes for development of our casting densification to establish blind ended forgings and castings.
Our technology and capability developments aim to enhance hollow ingots, novel forging and casting techniques.
We use different steel grades for development enabling us to work in conjunction with customers to develop new steel compositions and grades, designed specifically to meet bespoke requirements.
