Bright Sparks Awards 2026: Celebrating Early Careers Talent and Exceptional Mentorship

Published: 4 May 2026

Sheffield Forgemasters proudly celebrated the achievements of its apprentices at the Bright Sparks Awards 2026, held at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane. The event recognised outstanding early career talent while highlighting the strength of the apprenticeship and mentoring programmes that underpin the future of our business. The awards showcased apprentices who are already making a meaningful contribution across safety, quality, innovation, teamwork and leadership. Their success reflects not only individual drive and capability but also the investment that Sheffield Forgemasters continues to make in structured training, hands-on experience, and expert guidance throughout their early careers.

Central to this success is the commitment of our mentors, who play a critical role in developing skills, confidence and professional behaviours. Experienced colleagues across the business dedicate time, knowledge and leadership to support apprentices as they navigate complex engineering environments and real‑world manufacturing challenges.

This commitment sits alongside Sheffield Forgemasters’ wider investment in people, skills and long‑term capability, supported by significant recent investment in the business. Developing high‑value engineering and manufacturing skills locally is critical to the future of both the organisation and the wider South Yorkshire economy. By continuing to invest in apprenticeships, mentoring and early career pathways, Sheffield Forgemasters is helping to build a sustainable pipeline of skilled talent, retain expertise in the region and create opportunities for the next generation to thrive in advanced engineering careers close to home.

The importance of this contribution was recognised through the Mentor of the Year Award, presented to Andy Gatley, in recognition of his exceptional dedication, guidance and impact on apprentice development. Andy’s award reflects the calibre of mentoring across Sheffield Forgemasters and the culture of knowledge-sharing that strengthens capability at every level of the organisation.

The Bright Sparks Awards celebrate not only achievement today, but the long‑term value of investing in early careers and skills and the people who support them. Through strong mentoring, structured development pathways and meaningful opportunities, Sheffield Forgemasters is developing the next generation of skilled engineers, technicians, NDT specialists, Manufacturing Operatives and leaders.

This year’s Apprentice of the Year, Charlie Cottam (NDT Technician), was recognised for exceptional technical competence, professionalism and impact beyond expectations for their stage of development. Charlie’s achievement exemplifies the high standards set through our apprenticeship programme and the environment created for early talent to thrive.
