CAPABILITIES

Our independent test house, staffed by highly skilled, qualified and experienced personnel, is UKAS accredited to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025. It provides a wide range of mechanical and metallurgical testing services to the steel industry, as well as supporting various customers’ development projects.

Mechanical testing facilities are supported by laboratory heat treatment furnaces and comprehensive optical and digital imaging capabilities, including SEM. Test piece and metallographic sample preparation is carried out in a well-equipped machine shop, and the Test House benefits from the support of Sheffield Forgemasters’ extensive Research, Design and Technology department.

Test Piece and Sample Preparation Facilities

  • Manual and semi-automatic horizontal and vertical band saws up to 1.2 x 1.4 x 0.5 meters and max 1.5 tonnes
  • CNC and manual lathes for tensile test piece preparation to BS EN ISO 6892-1, ASTM A370-20 and ASTM E8/E8M-21
  • CNC and manual milling machines for Charpy impact test piece preparation to ASTM E23 and BS EN ISO 148-1 and CT fracture toughness test piece preparation
  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM)
  • Carbolite muffle furnace for heat treatment of test blanks to 1200°C
